Xylitol Information

The majority of children in learning disability classes have high incidences of ear infections. To help reduce ear infections, promote good dental hygiene, and more, I designed "THE XYLITOL PROJECT" for elementary students, the first in the nation. Twice each day students received a piece of xylitol gum or mint (with parental permission).

Xylitol is a natural sugar found in the birch tree. It was discovered in Finland during WW II when there was a sugar shortage. (Xylitol is also found in many fruits and vegetables, and the average person makes about 10 grams in the body every day.) Thirty years of research has proven that xylitol helps prevent ear infections, discourages gum disease, neutralizes plaque acids, and remineralizes tooth enamel.

In relation to learning, ear infections affect the vestibular system which is the inner ear. Ear infections are caused by a build-up of fluid in the ears, which greatly reduces hearing and children's ability to learn. The process of chewing gum activates the tendons in the tongue, which in turn activates the vestibular system. The combination of chewing and xylitol has proven to reduce fluid build-up in the ears. Movement, such as chewing, is also stimulating to the brain.
